God’s Chosen

And the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil?”
Job 1:8

God’s Chosen
God describes Job as “blameless and upright,” just as he is described at the beginning of the book.  Yet we know that Job’s faith will waver and at points seem to almost crumble and be lost.  At times Job seems like the farthest thing from someone “who fears God and turn away from evil.”  So hope are we to rectify these seemingly contradictory pictures of Job? By remembering the book of Job is not really about an answer to human suffering but a book about the fear of God and redemption.
Don’t lose track of the fact that it is God who in verse 8 describes Job as “blameless and upright.” It is GO who makes Job this way. It is not Job’s own doing.  Job is a righteous man because he has a righteous God. Although Job’s faith was tested and seemed close to failing, he remained a child of God and secure in his faith because God had made him such.  Just as God has called you into His family through the waters of Holy Baptism and has sustained you through His Word and Sacraments, you too need not worry when trials and temptations come your way.  For it was not by your own merit that you were saved, but by God’s in Christ.  You are a child of God because He has made you so.
