Fulfill My Hope

Oh that I might have my request, and that God would fulfill my hope, that it would please God to crush me, that he would let loose his hand and cut me off!
Job 6:8-9

Fulfill My Hope
There is a line in a country song which says, “Some of God’s greatest gifts are unanswered prayers.”  This seems a fitting line to Job’s request.  His hope is for God to crush him, that is to return him to the dust of the earth, so that his suffering would end.  Time and again we hear God’s people request this, and time and again God’s answer is no, you still have work to do.  Often we may feel the same way.  We come to the ends of our ropes, and we can’t fathom a way out, so we want God to just end the pain and suffering right then and there.  And for some He grants this request and calls them home, but for now any such request we have made has returned the answer, “Not now.” Though we might not understand or even agree with God’s plans for our lives, we can trust that they are for our blessing.  Had Job been taken by God upon his request we would have been robbed of Job greatest witness to the Gospel, and the most beautiful words in all of Scripture, “For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last he will stand upon the earth.” (Job 19: 25) The same can be said of every Christian soul, for we never know when and where the seeds of faith we have planted will sprout by the power of the Holy Spirit.  But each time they do, the angels in heaven rejoice and Job’s words ring fourth, “I know my Redeemer lives!” Therefore, we pray with our Lord Jesus Christ, “not as I will, but as you will.” (Matthew 26:39)
