A Great Wind

Then Bildad the Shuhite answered and said: “How long will you say these things, and the words of your mouth be a great wind? Does God pervert justice? Or does the Almighty pervert the right?
Job 8: 1-3

A Great Wind
We hear from Job’s second friend Bildad for the first time.  And, much like his first friend Eliphaz, Bildad does not offer much comfort.  In his opening remarks he accuses Job of blaspheming God and says that all of Job’s comments were like a great wind, prone to make noise but empty.  The world is full of examples of people who are like a great wind, whose words are shouted so all can hear but are empty and unfulfilling.  Job is not one of them.  Though he does not always understand and say the right thing, he does not speak empty words when it comes to God.  This is because Job speaks from a heart of faith.  Just as Job’s faith will see him through his current trial, your faith, given by the Holy Spirit see you through your trials and tribulations.  And you are bolstered not by words adrift on the wind by the Word anchored in God’s love.  It is God’s Word which gives comfort to the downtrodden, brings about repentance in the haughty, and restores our broken relationship with the Father.  For we know, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1).  Christ is the all sustaining Word in which we are given rescue and relief, and it is Christ who “is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105).
