“Or what woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and seek diligently until she finds it? And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.’ Just so, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
Luke 15:8–10

Many Christians today have succumbed to the notion that we have a part to play in our salvation. The idea is prevalent that we can choose to have faith or choose to believe in Christ as our Lord. The impression that I need to make a decision and pick Jesus is, unfortunately, a common one in many parts of Christianity today. But the clear witness of Scripture says just the opposite. The unrepentant sinner is like a coin lost in the darkness. Once lost, we have no more ability to find the Lord than the coin has to find its owner. We certainly can get ourselves lost, but have no ability to find our way home on our own. Yet, the good news of Christ crucified is that He gives “light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death.” Our merciful Lord seeks us because we have no power to seek Him. And thanks be to God that when we get lost, He seek us and that He has found us.
