But You Believe
16 For who were those who heard and yet rebelled? Was it not all those who left Egypt led by Moses? 17 And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? 18 And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient? 19 So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief.

But You Believe
Great and serious consequences take place in unbelief. God has sent forth his Word of rescue and life and in our sin and unbelief we walk away from it. We run from it. Sometimes we try to destroy it so that no one else can have it either. Thanks be to God that he sends forth a Word that is powerful and performative. He sends his Word into your hearts to create faith, to strengthen it, and to nourish and keep it. Your salvation is entirely because of his work of love and mercy to save you. You have been granted the gifts of heaven by the God that comes as the Babe of Bethlehem. He comes to the whole world and reveals himself to you in his Word and Sacraments. He comes to die on the cross and to rise again. He gives you the spoils won there. They are yours. Thanks be to God.
