Hear His Voice

7 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says,
                  “Today, if you hear his voice,
            8       do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion,
      on the day of testing in the wilderness,
            9       where your fathers put me to the test
      and saw my works for forty years.
            10       Therefore I was provoked with that generation,
                  and said, ‘They always go astray in their heart;
      they have not known my ways.’
            11       As I swore in my wrath,
      ‘They shall not enter my rest.’ ”

Hear His Voice
It is all in his voice. He commands everything that is by his very voice. His Word is performative. It always accomplishes what he sends it out to do. The world and the devil will rise up and try to provoke you into sin and rebellion. Tie your heart and your life to the Word that became flesh and delivered you by his dying on the cross and rising again. Enjoy the good protection and nourishment of God that you receive in the proclamation of his Word into your ears and his sacraments upon you and in you. The only way to know his ways is to set your ears on his Word. Rejoice in the rest he has won for you.
