Unfair

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
Romans 1:18-20

Unfair
We live in a society obsessed with “fairness.” It is unfair that some have more than others. It’s unfair that some people are smarter than others, have more talents, more money, more whatever. There is this notion that everyone should be equal in everything. So when the modern ear hears verses like the ones we have here in Romans, they think it unfair that God would judge everyone the same. After all, some people don’t have the same opportunities to learn about God, they don’t have the same advantages as other, more “faithful” people do. Paul shuts this argument down, letting us know that it is not our lack of knowledge about God that causes us to sin and incur His wrath, but it is, in fact, that which we do know about God yet choose to ignore and disobey that leads to our condemnation. God’s Law is written on our hearts, yet we are unrighteous and suppress the truth. We all deserve to be punished. Thanks be to God, though that it is not our righteousness that saves us but that of another, namely Christ Jesus.  He trades our unrighteousness for His righteousness in our Baptism. The Holy Spirit given faith clings to this truth and to the cross. For at that cross, the punishment we deserved for our unrighteousness was taken by Jesus. So now we have been reconciled to the Father, and it is His Son’s righteousness that He sees on our judgment day, and in His eternal power and divine nature, we are made heirs to His kingdom.
