God’s Promise

Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the value of circumcision? Much in every way. To begin with, the Jews were entrusted with the oracles of God. What if some were unfaithful? Does their faithlessness nullify the faithfulness of God? By no means! Let God be true though every one were a liar, as it is written, “That you may be justified in your words, and prevail when you are judged.”
Romans 3:1-4

God’s Promise
“I promise,” is a phrase that many people have become cynical about when they hear it. For many, those words were followed by actions that proved the opposite. We promise to do better; we promise to change our ways, and we promise that we will be honest and forthright, but no sooner than the words “I promise” come from our lips than we break that promise. Our sinful nature fights us every step of the way. No wonder we have such a hard time believing others when they give us their promise. The problem comes through when we treat God and His promises like those of ordinary men and women. We know that God has promised to be faithful to His Word, to hear our prayers and answer them. We know God’s promise of salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ, but too often, we doubt God’s sincerity. We just can’t believe that God upholds every promise. But He has, and He will. Just as the old covenant was secure because of God’s promise and not Abraham’s and his descendants, so are the promises of His New Covenant in Christ’s blood secure. Not because we uphold our end, but because God is faithful on His. Although Israel broke their promises, and we broke our promises, God kept His. God will not break His promises. So when we hear the promises given to us through His Word and Sacraments of salvation and life, we need never doubt, for our God is faithful.
