Have Mercy

27 And as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed him, crying aloud, “Have mercy on us, Son of David.” 28 When he entered the house, the blind men came to him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to him, “Yes, Lord.” 29 Then he touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith let it be done to you.” 30 And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, “See that no one knows about it.” 31 But they went away and spread his fame through all that district.

Have Mercy
Two blind men follow Jesus, crying out for mercy. They cannot see Him, but they confess who He is: the Son of David, the promised Messiah. Their faith does not rest upon what their eyes can perceive, but upon the Word and promise of Christ. Jesus asks whether they believe He is able to heal them. When they confess that they do, He touches their eyes, and they receive their sight. Jesus’ miracles are signs that He is the promised Savior who brings the kingdom of God and has authority over the effects of sin. Yet Christ came to do more than open blind eyes. He came to bear the sin that has blinded fallen humanity to God. At the cross, the Son of David gave His life for sinners, purchasing forgiveness with His holy blood. We too cry, “Have mercy on us.” And Christ answers with mercy. Through His Word and Sacraments, He gives us eyes of faith to see our Savior.
