Cleansing Blood
This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

Cleansing Blood
When John first writes to you he says that the Light was coming into the world and the darkness could not overcome it. The Light—Jesus Christ—has come into the world. That means that fellowship with the light is a rejection of the dark ways of sin and deception. There is no place for unrepentant sin in the Christian life. Our Lord bids us to repent. We acknowledge our sin and amend our sinful life. You can’t amend your sinful life without the intervention of the Holy Spirit. You know that the Holy Spirit is actively calling with the Gospel and enlightening with heavenly gifts and sanctifies you with the Word and Sacraments. But the Christian on this side of death struggles as a sinner and a righteous person. We are counted righteous because of our faith, but we daily sin much and need the rescue of our God. Thanks be to God that he is daily and continually active with his Word to save, heal, and forgive. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
