A Better Hope

18 For on the one hand, a former commandment is set aside because of its weakness and uselessness 19 (for the law made nothing perfect); but on the other hand, a better hope is introduced, through which we draw near to God.
20 And it was not without an oath. For those who formerly became priests were made such without an oath, 21 but this one was made a priest with an oath by the one who said to him:
                  “The Lord has sworn
and will not change his mind,
‘You are a priest forever.’ ”
22 This makes Jesus the guarantor of a better covenant.

A Better Hope
The law, though holy and good, cannot save. It exposes our sin and shows us our need for a Savior. In Hebrews 7:18–22, we see that the old covenant, tied to the Levitical priesthood, was set aside because it was weak and unable to bring perfection. The hope we have in Christ surpasses it entirely. Jesus, the eternal high priest, was appointed not by ancestry but by the power of His indestructible life. Through His death on the cross, Christ established a better covenant, sealed with His own blood. Unlike the priests of old, who repeatedly offered sacrifices, Jesus offered Himself once for all. His resurrection guarantees this covenant’s permanence and power. In Jesus, we have a better hope, through which we draw near to God. The cross reminds us that our access to the Father is secure, not by our works, but by His grace alone. Let us rest in His promise.
