A Matter of Justice

If it is a contest of strength, behold, he is mighty! If it is a matter of justice, who can summon him? Though I am in the right, my own mouth would condemn me; though I am blameless, he would prove me perverse.
Job 9:19-20

A Matter of Justice
We are quick to demand justice when we believe we have been wronged.  Yet Job faces an impossible situation.  He cannot accuse God of punishing an innocent man for doing so would be to question God’s justice.  Job sees rightly that there is no winning in a contest with God.  If we think we are right, our own words condemn us, when we believe we are blameless our darkened hearts betray us.  There is no situation in which we can look to ourselves for justification before God.  We simply are not redeemable on our own.  But as a matter of justice our sins have to be paid for.  The punishment has to be meted out. And this is where we become silent in demanding justice, because we know we are guilty, and in faith we know our guiltless Savior, Christ Jesus, paid our debts.  He took our sin and carried it to the cross. He died the death our sins demand.  And in exchange for this He clothed us in His righteousness. He justifies us before the Father.  This is why we do not look to ourselves for salvation, but to the cross. And upon that cross forgiveness was earned, and eternal life given to you.
