A Fearful Thing

26 For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries. 28 Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy on the evidence of two or three witnesses. 29 How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him who said, “Vengeance is mine; I will repay.” And again, “The Lord will judge his people.” 31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

A Fearful Thing
Deliberate sin is dangerous. When we willfully reject God’s grace and persist in sin without repentance, we trample on Christ’s sacrifice. The writer of Hebrews warns of the terrifying reality of falling into the hands of the living God. This is not a mere lapse into weakness but a hardened rejection of Christ’s atonement. Yet, the cross stands firm. Jesus bore the full wrath of God so that sinners might receive mercy. He suffered so that we would not face the fiery judgment we deserve. His blood, shed once for all, cleanses those who humbly repent and trust in Him. God is just, and His judgment is real. But for those in Christ, the hands of the living God are not terrifying, they are pierced hands, stretched out in love. Cling to Christ, confess your sins, and rest in His forgiveness, for in Him alone is salvation.
