Wisdom in Age

Are you the first man who was born? Or were you brought forth before the hills?

Wisdom in Age
Job for the first time will be asked the question of whether or not he has been around since the beginning.  Later God will ask a similar question in chapter 38.  Eliphaz accuses Job of presuming to be wise beyond his days.  Asking if he knows more than others when it comes to understanding God.  Now it is true that wisdom often accompanies age, but Job does not claim to be more learned that others.  In fact, his whole desire is for God to open Job’s mind to understand why he is suffering so much.  The truth is none of us are so wise as to even come close to understanding God completely.  God makes this clear when He speaks in Isaiah, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord” (Isaiah 55:8). We do well to remember such counsel.  Too often we believe we are far more astute than we actually are when it comes to knowing God.  However, God is not a mystery to us.  He has revealed Himself to us and even gone as far as becoming like us in every way, except without sin.  There is no barrier between us and God which keeps us from Him.  For in Christ, we have been reconciled to God (2 Corinthians 5:19).  We have been grafted into the True Vine (John 15:5) and are part of the one body (Romans 12:5).  God has revealed to us everything we need to know for salvation.  He has not hidden His face from us.  And in faith we come to know this truth.  Resting in the wisdom of God’s truth we are made free.
