A Just Balance

If I have walked with falsehood and my foot has hastened to deceit; (Let me be weighed in a just balance, and let God know my integrity!) if my step has turned aside from the way and my heart has gone after my eyes, and if any spot has stuck to my hands, then let me sow, and another eat, and let what grows for me be rooted out.
Job 31:5–8

A Just Balance
Frequently we fall for the devil’s trap of thinking that our works can save us and that we have lived a righteous life based on our outward actions.  We tell ourselves that we don’t commit major crimes, we give to charity, and have compassion for those in need.  We, like Job, think our actions can be weighed and that we will be found innocent.  Yet the truth is, that if God were to actually do this, if He were to weigh our “good” deeds against our bad, none would survive.  All would be found wanting.  For a just balance will show the weight of our sins. Even the “smallest” of our sins, by itself would condemn us.  And so, an unjust balance had to be made.  The righteous for the unrighteous, the innocent for the guilty. In His love, God sent His only Son to take our place on those scales.  And though Christ is innocent, sinless, and blameless, the wight of our sins, which He took on Himself, tipped the scales in favor of death.  Death on a cross for the Son of God, was price. The scales do not lie.  And in willingly submitting to the Father’s will, Jesus has freed us.  His death paid for our sins and reconciled us to the Father.  So now we are freed to love Him and love our neighbor, not in hopes of accomplishing our salvation, for it has already been secured by the blood of the Lamb, but simply in gratitude for a restored relationship.
