In Gold We Trust
If I have made gold my trust or called fine gold my confidence, if I have rejoiced because my wealth was abundant or because my hand had found much, if I have looked at the sun when it shone, or the moon moving in splendor, and my heart has been secretly enticed, and my mouth has kissed my hand, this also would be an iniquity to be punished by the judges, for I would have been false to God above.

In Gold We Trust
Our money has the motto, “In God We Trust” to remind ourselves that ultimately money cannot buy your safety and freedom. Those things are granted by God through His human agents. To trust in anything other than God is idolatry and a sin against the First Commandment. This is what Job is emphasizing in these verses. He denies any greed or idolatry on His part and recognizes them as sin. However, for us today, it is often the case that we pay lip service to this truth, but our actions betray our true feelings. It would be more appropriate for us to have the motto “In Gold We Trust” for we too often pursue it over all things. We allow our desire for money to cloud all our thoughts. We never have enough and fear losing it. We believe that as long as we have money, we will be okay, because money can get us whatever we need. We don’t trust in God to provide for us. We ignore the fourth petition of the Lord’s Prayer, “give us this day our daily bread”, and assume we are the once who provide for ourselves. Yet the truth is that God gives to all people, even the wicked, out of pure divine fatherly love. We need not worry about the material things of this life, God provides. Just as He provided manna in the desert, so today He gives to us salvation through His Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ. Jesus is the Bread of Life (John 6:35). He is the bread of life, in whom our hunger is satisfied. Through His death and resurrection, we have all which we will ever need, forgiveness, life, and salvation. As Luther said, “I have held many things in my hands, and I have lost them all; but whatever I have placed in God's hands, that I still possess.”
