Finding Wisdom

Behold, I waited for your words, I listened for your wise sayings, while you searched out what to say. I gave you my attention, and, behold, there was none among you who refuted Job or who answered his words. Beware lest you say, ‘We have found wisdom; God may vanquish him, not a man.’ He has not directed his words against me, and I will not answer him with your speeches.

Finding Wisdom
Elihu warns those who would lean on their own understanding and attempt to declare themselves wise by worldly standards. He is upset that Job’s friends feel secure in condemning Job and placing blame for his condition on outward sins and unrighteous living, but at the same time unable to actually point to any of these supposed misdeeds. We sinful humans are very good at justifying ourselves in our own eyes.  We see the speck in our brother’s eye while missing the plank in our own (Matthew 7:5). We find wisdom in the ways of the world yet shun God’s truth. For this reason, God sent His Son.  For without His birth, life, death, and resurrection, we would have remained in our own deluded sense of righteousness, convinced as the pharisees were, that we have earned our way into heave.  For only in Christ is true wisdom found. “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him” (James 1:5).  For it is His Word where we are given faith to truly understand our condition and to know that the cross and empty tomb are why we are saved.  And that even in the midst of suffering Christ remains to minister and heal, His blood washing over our sins. He has opened our hearts and minds to the truth so that “the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him” (Ephesians 1:17).
