The Beatitudes – the Hungry
Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you shall be satisfied.

The Beatitudes – the Hungry
The previous Beatitude spoke of being poor. And as often happens, where there is poverty, there is hunger. The poor are also hungry. Yet as we understand the Words of Christ, our minds and hearts are open to a new reality. One which the unbelieving heart cannot comprehend. Those who hunger, the way in which Jesus speaks of here, represent all those who are oppressed in this life and hunger now for satisfaction. They will be filled and satisfied in the age to come at the wedding feast that has no end. The satisfaction of the hungry points us to the future satisfaction and abundance of forgiveness we receive at the Lord’s Supper, which is itself a foretaste of the wedding feast to come. Therefore, we are drawn eagerly to His table to receive His blessings and forgiveness, as our hunger is satiated by the true Bread of Life, in, with, and under the bread and wine in the Lord’s Supper. Therefore, we gather at His altar so as to be fed with the bread of immortality.
