Looking Forward

“Arise, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I will give it to you.”

Looking Forward
You observe that Abraham, who, according to the promise, is the lord of the land of Canaan, is merely a guest and has no definite place to come to rest with his people; for he is commanded to migrate from one place to another. And this is the reason why the fathers regarded also their material promises with a spiritual understanding. Thus the Letter to the Hebrews (11:9-10) states very beautifully: "By faith Abraham sojourned in the Land of the Promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. For he looked forward to the city which has foundations, whose Builder and Maker is God." Through this faith Abraham overcame a long and troublesome exile; nor did it offend him that Lot had an abode that was both definite and very comfortable.
