By Faith, Not by Sight

29 By faith the people crossed the Red Sea as on dry land, but the Egyptians, when they attempted to do the same, were drowned. 30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they had been encircled for seven days. 31 By faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient, because she had given a friendly welcome to the spies.

By Faith, Not by Sight
The Israelites crossed the Red Sea, Rahab sheltered the spies, and all of it was done by faith. None of them saw the final outcome when they acted. The people at the sea saw only water before them and an army behind. Rahab saw only the destruction of her city looming. But faith clings to God's promises, not human sight. Faith in Christ works the same way. The cross appears weak and foolish to the world, yet it is God's power for salvation. We do not see our own victory over sin, death, and the devil, but we trust that Christ has already won it for us. Just as Rahab and Israel were saved by faith in God's word, so we are saved by faith in Christ crucified. He is our greater Joshua, leading us through the waters of Baptism into the promised land of eternal life.
