A Future Reward
"Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great."
GENESIS 15:1

A Future Reward
God indeed gives great gifts to those who are His, just as here He gave Abraham a glorious victory. Nevertheless, He does not yet pour out all His gifts; nor does He give Himself completely. Although you may have greater gifts than either Abraham or Moses, still you do not yet have the Lord Himself. He withholds and, as it were, removes Himself from us, evidently in order that when we are not being tried and all is serene and quiet, we may still fear Him and not say, as the smug do: "I shall never be shaken." For if we sing this song, the words "Thou didst hide Thy face, I was dismayed" follow at once. Therefore those who consider themselves invincible when they are not afflicted are struck with boundless fear when they are in the clutches of a trial. But this is not because God may have changed His mind, as though He had withdrawn His grace and were refusing to grant forgiveness of sins. His will to save us through His Son, to whose kingdom He has called us, remains steadfast and unchangeable; but the awareness of this mercy is removed for a time.
