The Blessing in the Seed

“And by your Seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice."
GENESIS 22:18 (according to Luther's translation)

The Blessing in the Seed
All glorying is excluded by the phrase "in your Seed," which is added to the promise. That Seed sets aside all other blessings and the glory of one's own righteousness and bestows His on us, namely, "that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith" (Philippians 3:9). Therefore all nations will bless themselves in no other than "in your Seed." In Him are all the treasures of wisdom, righteousness, and holiness; and whatever there will be anywhere among them that is praiseworthy they will have in its entirety through this Seed. . .. Abraham was endowed with many extraordinary virtues and gifts which he surely should have acknowledged and praised; but he has no glory before God, because all glorying is excluded. . .. Because God blesses solely in this Seed of Abraham, He also wants us to be blessed and to bless ourselves in this Seed; that is, we should glory and maintain with assurance that this Seed is ours and belongs to us with all its good things and heavenly treasures. . . . For from Him and in Him we are the blessed of Christ and the anointed, and every one of us can make this boast: "Christ is my formal blessing, anointing, life, and salvation, because I cling to Him; and by this one who blesses I am designated as blessed, and I call myself blessed."
