The Word Planted in the Heart
The Word spoken by his father reigns in [Joseph's] heart. This he retains with the utmost firmness. "My father has taught me. No matter how long God wants to forsake me, I will hold out. My father has taught me to believe and to wait patiently for God's help, no matter how long He postpones or delays. 'Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage"' (Psalm 27:14). For Joseph had the entire Psalter in his heart, since in actuality and in effect he does everything taught in the Psalms about faith, patience, and waiting. He waits, and he sustains himself with the divine promises which he heard from his father. He does not despair; nor does he murmur against God. . .. These are truly miracles. The Holy Spirit was present there in Joseph, and the Word planted in his heart is kept impressed and rooted in such a way that it becomes an immovable rock against the devil on the right and on the left. This is a miracle of miracles set before the whole world.
