Attacks of the Devil

While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, “The Chaldeans formed three groups and made a raid on the camels and took them and struck down the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” Job 1:17

Attacks of the Devil
Job’s fortunes continue to be lost as the devil inflicts his evil schemes upon him.  His oxen, sheep, camels, and servants all perished.  Job is left in essence bankrupt.  All the material wealth he had enjoyed when he woke up that morning were now gone.  This is what makes reading Job so difficult for us.  We see a righteous and upright man who has the fear of the Lord in him, but that is not enough to save him from the attacks of the devil. This should serve as a warning to us as well.  The devil roams around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.  Being a Christian is not a ticket to easy street, where all our troubles and trials go away. In fact, Jesus warns us it is just the opposite, “you will be hated by all nations for my name's sake.” (Matthew 24:9) The devil has no need to attack those who reject God, he already has them.  Your faith paints a target on your back which the devil is taking aim at.  Yet, in the end the devil is not powerful enough to defeat Christ.  In fact, he has already been defeated.  Which is why when the attacks of the devil come, we go to where the victory was won.  We cling to the cross knowing the blood of Christ shed for us reigns victorious.
