Calling a Thing What It Is
“A theologian of glory calls evil good and good evil. A theologian of the cross calls the thing what it actually is.” Martin Luther wrote these words in his now famous Heidelberg Disputation. Unfortunately, we too often forget this and become theologians of glory. We mistake being a Christian as a guarantee of good times and sunny days. Therefor when suffering does come, we do not know how to respond. We think, like Job’s friends, that only the wicked endure suffering. However, a cursory studying of history reveals just the opposite. Many good people have suffered through no fault of their own. Many upright and virtuous people have suffered through real tragedy. But as theologians of the cross, we understand the righteous do suffer and through this suffering God works His mercy and salvation. In a world marred by sin, death, and the devil, we cannot avoid suffering. Therefore, when it does come, do not blame God, and turn from Him, but cling to the cross of Christ, who accomplished your salvation through His own suffering.
