Fleeing Serpent

The pillars of heaven tremble and are astounded at his rebuke. By his power he stilled the sea; by his understanding he shattered Rahab. By his wind the heavens were made fair; his hand pierced the fleeing serpent. Behold, these are but the outskirts of his ways, and how small a whisper do we hear of him! But the thunder of his power who can understand?”
Job 26:11–14

Fleeing Serpent
Heaven must have trembled the day Satan and his angles we cast out.  It would have been a sad spectacle to behold. In their pride and envy those fallen angels convinced themselves they were better than God, that as creatures they had no need for their creator.  This is the same lie the devil sold to Adam and Eve in the garden and humankind has been paying the price ever since.  Yet God promised the woman and the devil that He would ultimately make things right again (Genes 3:15).  And on a rugged cross some two-thousand years ago God made right on His promise.  The struck at the heal of Eve’s Offspring, the Son of Mary, and He crushed his head.  The old serpent’s grip on humanity was destroyed.  Yet the devil has not slithered away just yet.  He “prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8).  Yet we need not cower in fear.  For in Christ, we have won the victory! “One little word shall fell him” as we sing in A Mighty Fortress. Christ’s Word has the power to heal and make whole. His Word gives faith to the faithless and power to the powerless.  And before Jesus the serpent flees, cowering in his pit.  And we rest secure in our Saviors loving embrace.  For He has destroyed death itself.
