The Way

Where is the way to the dwelling of light, and where is the place of darkness, that you may take it to its territory and that you may discern the paths to its home? You know, for you were born then, and the number of your days is great!
Job 38:19–21

The Way

God asks Job here if he knows where the light dwells and where the darkness goes.  Then, to prove to all of us that He has a biting sense of humor, He sarcastically answers the question, “You know, for you were born then, and the number of your days is great!” Before anything, there was God, then He spoke creation into being.  One of the oldest creations of God is light. We were not around to see this happen.  Our days are minuscule compared to the history of creation.  And so, in answering Job, and us, in such a way, God reminds us to stay in our lane.  God is God, and we are not. He knows what He is doing even when we don’t, and He does not need our help or counsel in determining what to do. Yet as powerful and all-knowing as God is, He still created us to be in a relationship with us. He gave us life so that we might rest in Him, warmed by the light of His Son. He shows us the way to Himself, and it is through His Son.  Jesus reminds us of this, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). So in faith, we walk in His ways to the Father, guided and sustained by His Word and Sacraments, to one day come into His kingdom.
