The Cords of Orion

Can you bind the chains of the Pleiades or loose the cords of Orion? Can you lead forth the Mazzaroth in their season, or can you guide the Bear with its children? Do you know the ordinances of the heavens? Can you establish their rule on the earth?
Job 38:31–33

The Cords of Orion
The vastness of the universe is incomprehensible to the human mind.  The scope and size of our own galaxy, the Milky Way, are astronomical. It would take nearly 100 thousand years just to travel across it if we were traveling at the speed of light. And the Milky Way is just one of the billions of galaxies in the universe.  It seems chaotic at times when we study it. Meteors flying by earth or slamming into other planets. Dying stars which explode and destroy planets, blackholes that bend time itself. All this can be frightening if we were to dwell solely on it. Yet in the midst of all the seeming chaos, there is order. How can that be? God has set the boundaries of our universe and maintains them. He has ordered the stars and the planets so that they function in perfect harmony. He assures life on our planet survives. Without His providence, we would not survive. This is what He is telling Job and us in these verses. He watches over us and protects us. And in the chaos of our own sin-filled world, He does the same. He sent His Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ to order our lives. So now our days revolve around Him. His forgiveness and salvation bring order to chaos. His Word and Sacraments become our lodestar.
