Under the Shade

Under the lotus plants he lies, in the shelter of the reeds and in the marsh. For his shade the lotus trees cover him; the willows of the brook surround him. Behold, if the river is turbulent he is not frightened; he is confident though Jordan rushes against his mouth. Can one take him by his eyes, or pierce his nose with a snare?
Job 40:21–24

Under the Shade
God continues to speak of this magnificent and terrifying beast as He questions Job about his ability to create such a creature. He describes the behemoth as resting under the shade of the lotus tree and swimming unincumbered in the turbulent waters of the Jordan. This magnificent beast reminds us of God’s power and might as He is able to create such animals. We are reminded once agon that God is God and we are not. Too often we forget this. Because God is so gracious and we do receive His blessings in abundance we too often take these blessings for granted. We lie under the shade God has provided without a thought about the gifts He has provided. That is why God’s Law brings us out of this delusion. It shows us that we are not worthy of these great gifts for we have sinned against God and against our neighbor. And when we are convicted under the Law God brings us relief through His Gospel. Under the shade of the Gospel, we rest secure knowing that Christ has paid for our sins and forgiveness is ours. The soothing balm of the Gospel heals our broken spirits and brings comfort to our souls. For it is in the shade of the cross where we rest secure.
