The Leviathan
Can you draw out Leviathan with a fishhook or press down his tongue with a cord? Can you put a rope in his nose or pierce his jaw with a hook?
Job 41:1–2

The Leviathan
There has been quite a lot of debate over what creature exactly the leviathan was. What is described does not exist today. But what we do know is that this creature represents something totally horrid and evil. It represents a creature that would stand in defiance against the Lord. And in that respect, the leviathan is our old ancient foe the devil. Seen in this light we quickly understand that we, by our own strength and reason cannot overcome the devil. We are too weak, too susceptible to his wiles. Yet there is One who can indeed face the devil and win. He already has! Christ Jesus crushed the head of the devil in His death and resurrection. And in our Baptisms, we are brought into the body of Christ, and He fights for us. So that the mighty leviathan becomes nothing more than a sniveling and cowering beast when he is confronted with the Word of God. This does not mean that he will not continue to mislead and deceive us, for he certainly will, but it does mean that the victory is ours in Christ Jesus. We need not fear the schemes of the devil for the Word of God presses down the tongue of the devil and the light of the resurrection pierces his jaw as to render him silent. Christ has drawn out the leviathan and destroyed him.
