A Royal Priesthood
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
1 Peter 2:9–10

A Royal Priesthood
Martin Luther wrote, “Each and all are … equally spiritual priests before God.… Faith alone is the true priestly office.… Therefore all Christian men are priests, all women priestesses, be they young or old, master or servant, mistress or maid, learned or unlearned” (AE 35:101). We are here reminded that even though we suffer and face hardships, God has not abandoned us. If fact, the opposite is true. God has called us into His family. We belong to Him. Suffering and pain do not change this fact. We were called out of the darkness of sin and separation from our Father by the glorious light of Christ. It is only there, in His light, that we can see and know this truth. Apart from God, we are alone. Apart from God, we have no relationship with Him or with our neighbor. Having been given the gift of being called into the light of Christ, we are brought into His Body, the Church. Now we belong; now we are part of God’s people, a royal priesthood.
