A New Heavens and a New Earth
Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.

A New Heavens and a New Earth
Peter knows that the Christian life includes sacrifice and denial. It takes work. Our faith won’t let us just sit there. The Holy Spirit planted that faith, and it produces fruit. The fruit of faith comes forth because of the growth God grants. We ought to be people who live lives of holiness and godliness. We’re not talking about earning our way to salvation, we are talking about what a heart that is already saved does. To put it another way, the Lord Jesus made you a good tree by wrapping you in his righteousness and forgiving your sins and good trees bear good fruit. Thus, we live in the Word of God, we partake of the sacraments, we pray, and we wait. The day comes when the Lord will dissolve the divisions cast by sin and he will gather us to himself in a new heaven and a new earth to worship and praise him. Then there will be only godliness and peace.
