Children of God
See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.

Children of God
To be called the children of God is the greatest of honors. It reminds us of our identity in Christ. Yet before we had this honor of being children of God, we were His enemies. In our sinfulness, we reject God and His good gifts. We were set against Him and would have remained that way if not for His love for us. Our loving Father sent His only Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Jesus took on our flesh, becoming like us in every way except without sin so that we could have an advocate before the Father. So now, clothed in Christ’s righteousness, He speaks for us on our judgment day. His innocence is ours; our salvation is on account of His death and resurrection. We have a new identity in Him. And that identity is as Christ’s brothers and sisters. We are a part of His holy family and God is our heavenly Father, and our baptismal certificates serve as proof that we are children of God.
