This is he who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not by the water only but by the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. For there are three that testify: the Spirit and the water and the blood; and these three agree. If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater, for this is the testimony of God that he has borne concerning his Son. Whoever believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning his Son. And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

There are a lot of false teachers in the world. They recycle the old heresies and wrap them up in new and shiny ways, but in the end, they are still damning and serve only to lead us away from the truth of God’s Word. So how are we to decipher the truth from lies? The simple truth is that the testimony of the apostles, the life of Jesus, and the work of the Holy Spirit testify that God has given us life in His Son. This testimony is in stark contradiction to all who teach that God’s Son did not suffer in the flesh or that He comes to us apart from the flesh of His humanity. The water and the blood testify to Jesus’ Baptism and crucifixion, which revealed the love of God for us and have accomplished His will for the salvation of the world. Just as Jesus is the truth, so also His Holy Spirit is the truth. At His Baptism in the muddy waters of the Jordan river, the Spirit testified concerning Jesus, marking Him as the Christ who was to come and the Son of God. Even now the Holy Spirit reminds every believer of all that Jesus has said and done. The Holy Spirit always testifies to Jesus and glorifies Jesus and guides us into all truth.
