Set In Time
The word of the LORD that came to Hosea, the son of Beeri, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel.

Set In Time
The Bible is God’s Word to us. It is His gift and tells of His plan of salvation for His people. There are many amazing accounts and miraculous events which are recorded. Yet unlike most sacred texts of other religions, the Bible is grounded in truth and reality, it is set in time. We can know without a doubt that the accounts of the Bible actually happened because we have extrabiblical accounts that collaborate these events. So here, at the beginning of Hosea, we are given the names of people and places that we know existed, there is no doubt about the truthfulness of what is to come. So it is that God comes to us as well. Not in some dream-like state or out-of-body experience. He does not come to us in our unreliable emotions and feelings, but He comes to us in concrete ways. In His Word and Sacraments, our God comes to us offering life and salvation. He comes to us to forgive our sins and make us His own. He came into our world as the Word incarnate, Jesus Christ, and that same Christ still comes to us at the altar as we receive His true body and blood. And He does this so that we would not doubt but believe, and in believing we would have life eternal.
