The Word of the Lord
We live in an age dominated by science. Just the facts and nothing more. If it can’t empirically be proven, then I won’t believe it. Don’t misunderstand, true science is a gift from God that has allowed us to understand His creation in great detail. Yet there are things beyond the physical confines of science. God’s true, inerrant, infallible Word being chief among them. Throughout the ages, God has used many and various ways to motivate His prophets to record His Word. Sometimes, such divine inspiration came through dreams or visions, as was the case with the prophet Daniel. Still, at other times, it came through a clear and distinct voice, such as with the prophet Ezekiel. Yet with Joel, we do not know exactly how the Lord revealed His Word to him. But at the same time, the opening verse of his book unequivocally affirms that what follows is God’s Word, not merely the prophet’s impression or best approximation. God is so wise and powerful that even though He uses fallen, sinful men to be the ones to reveal His will, each book of the Bible is a trustworthy revelation of the Lord’s will for His people and our lives. And in this knowledge, we rest secure in the promise of forgiveness, life, and salvation won for us by Christ Jesus on the cross.
