The Lord’s Name

“Woe to him who builds a town with blood and founds a city on iniquity! Behold, is it not from the LORD of hosts that peoples labor merely for fire, and nations weary themselves for nothing? For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.”
Habakkuk 2:12–14

The Lord’s Name
We would build our cities to make a name for ourselves. Curved in on ourselves, we miss that our sin causes great destruction to those around us. We are always concerned about our station, our name, our life before others. We are caught up trying to create something for ourselves, by ourselves. The Lord makes a name for himself that he places upon us. He sends forth his Word. It always accomplishes that which he sends it to do. It endures to all generations; indeed, it endures forever. We build and try to make a name for ourselves by the blood of our neighbors, Jesus builds a holy city, by his own blood. We work and all the while sin. He works by going all the way to the cross and takes away our sin. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. This knowledge comes from Jesus himself. He places the Triune name upon you in Baptism and takes away the iniquity from you. He places his cross upon your head and your heart to mark you as one redeemed by Christ the crucified. Like the waters that cover the earth, the knowledge of the Lord covers all our iniquity.
