The Truth of His Word
“For at that time I will change the speech of the peoples to a pure speech, that all of them may call upon the name of the LORD and serve him with one accord. From beyond the rivers of Cush my worshipers, the daughter of my dispersed ones, shall bring my offering.”
Zephaniah 3:9–10

The Truth of His Word
It is the Lord himself that ordains perfect speech, perfect praise, with the mouths of his servants. The basis of our daily prayers starts with this premise. King David knew this truth when he said, “O Lord, open my lips and my mouth will declare your praise.” God takes what is tangled and dark, he takes what is riddled with deception and lies, and he throws it all out. In its place, God puts the truth of his Word. That means that our speaking (our praying) is a response the Word that is first preached into our ears and read by our eyes. The life of a Christian is an ebb and flow with the Word of God coming to us to form and shape our prayer and praise. Our speaking is the calling on the name of the Lord. It is a beckoning back to the very name that was placed upon us in our baptism. It is a returning to the very name by which we are saved. Our prayers are filled with the very life-giving Word that hung on the cross and took away our sin. The life of a Christian is a life drawn from the forgiveness of sins and salvation of Christ. That life and salvation is given us—freely and with no strings attached. The truth of that Word endures forever and in every situation. The truth of that Word changes us. Thanks be to God that we are his servants and that he has given us his holy Word.
