Doomed to Slaughter
Thus said the LORD my God: “Become shepherd of the flock doomed to slaughter. Those who buy them slaughter them and go unpunished, and those who sell them say, ‘Blessed be the LORD, I have become rich,’ and their own shepherds have no pity on them. For I will no longer have pity on the inhabitants of this land, declares the LORD. Behold, I will cause each of them to fall into the hand of his neighbor, and each into the hand of his king, and they shall crush the land, and I will deliver none from their hand.”

Doomed to Slaughter
Where is Jesus in the Old Testament? This is a question that is often asked. When we hear this prophecy from the prophet Zechariah, we can point to it and say here, here is our Savior. We have a Good Shepherd, Christ Jesus. He guides us and protects us. Even going as far as laying down His life for ours. And in these verses, we see the Shepherd’s unhappiness with His people. They, we, desire other shepherds who would lead us where we want to go instead of where we need to be. And with the devil, the world, and our own sinful flesh leading us, we are doomed to slaughter. Therefore, our Good Shepherd steps in. He rescues us from the weeds and thorns of this world in which we become entangled. He fights off the predators as they try to tear us apart. He places Himself at the gate to ensure we stay with Him and nothing comes to snatch us away. And finally, our Good Shepherd becomes the spotless lamb who goes silently to the cross, so that His blood would wash us clean. Thanks be to God that He sent His Son, our Good Shepherd.
