The Father of Many Nations

16 That is why it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his offspring—not only to the adherent of the law but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all, 17 as it is written, “I have made you the father of many nations”—in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist.
Romans 4:16-17

The Father of Many Nations

The covenant was made to Abraham. The promised delivered to him. His descendants would be as numerous as the sand on the sea shore. Saint John the Baptist says that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from the very stones. Indeed, he has raised up those who were dead in their sin and has made them children of Abraham and therefore children of God by their Baptism. This is the work of the Holy Spirit. He calls you with the Gospel. The Gospel is the good news that Jesus died and rose again for you. The proclamation of this Gospel is performative. It takes what is dead and makes it alive. You are alive to God because of his Word. You are alive to God because he has sent his Holy Spirit to you. You are enlightened with the gifts of the cross. You are made holy by the means of grace. You are called children of the most high God. He is delighted in you for Jesus' sake.
