And they went to a place called Gethsemane. And he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” And he took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be greatly distressed and troubled. And he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and watch.” And going a little farther, he fell on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. And he said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”

Even the Son of God prays to his Father. He prays that the Father's will is done. Jesus asks that his will conform to the Father's will. He bids his disciples stay awake and watch. He bids you and me stay away and watch and conform our wills to the Heavenly Father. All things are possible with God. The Law was kept for you. Your sins have been taken from you. All this according to the will of the Father. When the pastor stands at the altar, the will of the Father is done for you. He proclaims the forgiveness of sin and the washing away of your iniquity. When the water of Baptism is poured over you, the will of the Father is done. When the body and blood of Jesus is placed upon your lips, the will of the Father is done. this is the God that rescues and makes new. Thanks be to God!
