Freedom and Love

27 If one of the unbelievers invites you to dinner and you are disposed to go, eat whatever is set before you without raising any question on the ground of conscience. 28 But if someone says to you, “This has been offered in sacrifice,” then do not eat it, for the sake of the one who informed you, and for the sake of conscience— 29 I do not mean your conscience, but his. For why should my liberty be determined by someone else’s conscience? 30 If I partake with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of that for which I give thanks?

Freedom and Love
St.  Paul reminds us of the delicate balance between Christian freedom and love for our neighbor. As believers, we are free to eat and drink without fear, for everything is sanctified by God’s grace. Yet, this freedom must be exercised with care and consideration for others. If a weaker brother or sister's conscience is troubled by what we do, love compels us to refrain. This teaches us that Christian liberty is not about asserting our rights but about serving one another in love. We do not live for ourselves alone but are called to build up the body of Christ. In moments of decision, our question should not only be, "Can I do this?" but also, "Does this glorify God and edify my neighbor?" By putting love first, we mirror the selflessness of Christ, who gave up His life for us all.
