Paying Close Attention

2 Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. 2 For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, 3 how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, 4 while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.

Paying Close Attention
The writer of Hebrews warns us to pay close attention to the Word of God, lest we drift away. Like a boat untied from the dock, neglecting the message of salvation leaves us vulnerable to being swept away by the currents of the world. God’s Word is no ordinary message, it is anchored in Christ’s death and resurrection. The cross stands as the centerpiece of this salvation, a vivid reminder of God’s love and the price paid to redeem us from sin. This message has been confirmed through signs, wonders, and ultimately through the witness of the apostles. It is not merely historical knowledge but a present reality for us. Through the Word and Sacraments, the Holy Spirit continually calls us back to the cross, where we see the fulfillment of God’s promises. Let us heed the call, holding fast to the hope we have in Christ, our unshakable anchor.
