For No Reason

Then Satan answered the LORD and said, “Does Job fear God for no reason? Have you not put a hedge around him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.
Job 1:9-10

For No Reason
Satan twists everything.  Most notably he twists God’s Word.  He did it in the garden, he did it in the desert tempting Jesus, and he does it here in Job as well.  He falsely accuses Job of fearing God simply because God has rewarded him with material wealth.  Yet without seeming to know it Satan contradicts himself and proves God’s point. Like we so often do, Satan doesn’t see all of Job’s wealth and blessings as the free gifts which they are.  We look to the success in our lives and puff out our chests in braggadocios fashion thinking we have achieved it ourselves, too often forgetting it is in fact God who bestows all blessing, earthly and eternal. Satan, as do we, forgets all good things come from God and are worthy of praise.  God blessed Job not because he had merited the blessings, but for no reason other than that God is gracious and loving towards His children.  In the same way, He gives us the most precious gift of forgiveness through the sacrifice of His Son, not because we earned it, but for no reason other than He loves us and wants us to be in a relationship with Him. It is this free gift -which allows us to love God and serve Him.
