Stones of the Field

At destruction and famine you shall laugh, and shall not fear the beasts of the earth. For you shall be in league with the stones of the field, and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with you.
Job 5:22-23

Stones of the Field
Farming and gardening are difficult and demanding vocations, which can yield great rewards when done well, or leave one wanting more, when done poorly.  Just as Christ warned against seeds planted in rocky soil would not last (Matthew 13:5), we understand the need to have the proper ground when planting.  When one has good soil, but it is covered in stones, they don’t abandon the field, instead they remove the stones.  They prepare the soil to be able to take the seed and produce.  Our lives without God are at best a rocky field.  We are incapable of producing good fruit and the stones of sin cause us to wither and die because the seeds of faith cannot take root.  Yet we cannot remove these stones ourselves, so what are we to do?  Blessedly, God takes care of that for us.  By His Holy Spirit, faith is given, to know just as the stone was rolled away from the empty tomb, so too are the stones in our life removed by Christ’s death and resurrection.  Led by the Spirit we repent, and the stones are no more, and good soil is exposed.  Seeds of faith are water through the Word and Sacraments and spring forth in love towards God and neighbor.  In turn producing the fruits of good works which serve God and neighbor by sowing seeds of faith.  The same seeds which the Holy Spirt makes grow.  In Christ our fields have been cleared and a heavenly harvest awaits.
